The ISY Schoolwide Action Plan

The International School Yangon, through a cycle of continuous school improvement, bases its improvement efforts on the outcomes of a self-study analysis in the form of a schoolwide action plan. The ISY Schoolwide Action Plan 2014 – 2018 combines identified areas of growth from the 2014 Self-Study Report and the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS-WASC) 2014 Visitation Report and builds upon initiatives previously in progress. The Action Plan is reviewed and updated yearly.

The goals reflected in the ISY Schoolwide Action Plan include:

  • Continue to establish a consistent, comprehensive standards-based/learner outcome-based assessment system to provide a balanced, accurate representation of student achievement.
  • Develop systems to support and enhance student learning.
  • Integrate writing, research, critical thinking, and creativity into curriculum, instruction, and assessments.
  • Teachers understand and apply principles of high impact instruction to improve and
    enhance learning for all students.
  • Develop and implement plans to ensure quality purpose-built facilities that support the curriculum, co-curriculum, security, safety, and health needs of ISY students.

ACS-WASC Accreditation

ISY is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS-WASC), which utilizes a protocol for accrediting schools—Focus on Learning—as part of a cycle of continuous school improvement. Through the use of criteria, communication patterns, evidence gathering techniques, and insight from fellow educators, the accreditation process serves as a vehicle to move school community members into meaningful schoolwide improvement and accountability.

The Focus on Learning process has been widely accepted throughout the ACS-WASC region as integral to successful student learning. The basic components of the ACS-WASC accreditation process that schools institutionalize as they address growth areas that impact student learning include: 1) the defining of quality achievement of schoolwide learner outcomes for every student by all stakeholders; 2) schoolwide interdisciplinary dialogue based on evidence gathering and analysis about what students are doing and producing; and 3) the development, implementation, and accomplishment of a schoolwide action plan.

As part of the process of accreditation, the May 2014 ACS-WASC visitation committee provided an external evaluation of all ISY programs, validated the findings of the April 2014 ISY Self-Study Report, and approved the ISY Action Plan (2014-2018). The commendations and recommendations of the WASC visitation committee are key indicators of ISY overall organizational performance and will help provide continuity of school improvement over time.

The ISY Curriculum and Continuous Improvement

The ISY Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Review Cycle (CIARC) is a systematic review process that facilitates the review, development, implementation, and improvement of ISY curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The aims and desired outcomes of the ISY CIARC include maximizing student learning and ensuring an engaging, relevant, challenging, and well-articulated Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 program in all subject areas.
